Dave, you should reveal the details of the election of 1876 where the democrats yielded the presidency to Rutherford Hayes after a contested election. Months later, in February, with no president the democrats agreed to accede to Hayes in exchange for removing the union troops, doing reconstruction and ensuring the new rights afforded to blacks, from the South, ensuring that blacks would not be allowed to have those rights for another 90 years, until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
