My town of around 74,000 has Albertson's (3), Walmart (2) and several independents. Walmart may have the lowest prices, but I no longer shop there on principle. Albertson's is hands-down the most expensive grocer in town. A mega-grocer-merger? Dave's right, you ain't seen nothing yet on food prices. The independents are competitive, but not Albertson's. I've always said that someday there will be only one bank, one gasoline brand, and one grocery store and they will all be expensive...

It's NOT gonna be a monopoly...

I used to work for Jewel (part of the Albertson's family, and the dominant grocer in Chicagoland, though not as much as before). There are also plenty of Mariano's (Kroger) in the Chicago area. Jewel looks "dated" on the inside, their produce is relatively slim pickings compared to smaller regional chains that have much better selection - Jewel did pioneer one-stop shopping when they acquired Osco Drug a long time ago. Mariano's didn't impress me the last time I was there a few years ago. Some of their "cheaper" brands were overpriced, and the prices shown on their goods, was the "loyalty card" price, and they didn't show what prices were if you didn't have the card, so I don't shop there.

I don't shop @ Mariano's (Kroger), and rarely shop @ Jewel (Albertson's), but I still have plenty of other options to choose from, and they're cheaper as well. Jewel has rested on its laurels for decades, and it shows. Walmart is the leading grocer nationwide with 22% of the market, and the merged company still would comprise about a projected 13% of the market. They may have bigger purchasing power, but that doesn't necessarily result in the best quality of product

Hi Dave. Albertsons has also been merged with Safeway for awhile now. We used to have both stores but Albertsons had to shutter because of the merger. Now we just have 2 Safeways and a Walmart for a city of about 18,000 people. County wide (about 65k) is a total of 3 Safeways 2 Walmarts and a Costco… not much choice Debi Port Angeles WA

I was just discussing this with my wife. What about Sherman Antitrust act? I think Kroger bought out Marsh (grocery chain) a few years ago. Kroger said ( as reported on the radio) that this would help them lower prices to consumers. Kroger is high priced now compared to other locals now. I said 50 years ago that there would be 2 banks, 2 phone companies, etc., and this would be called competition.
