I would love some points to use, as I have been appointed as a planning commissioner in a town in VA. I am seeing the developers wanting to put in over packed housing here, and we are a rural community. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thankfully I live in Florida and do 'own' my property outright. In Florida, we are a Homestead Exemption state. You could find yourself in some sort of receivership or debit situation, but they cannot take your homestead. Even in bankruptcy cases, the homestead is not sizable property and that includes if you transfer the property to family members, or if, as I have done, you place it in a trust. You could loose your property for unpaid property taxes, but there are rather generous exceptions to the property tax rates for homestead, age and disabilities that can reduce that load considerably. Couple that with no state income tax and its easy to see why we have so many Yankees moving here!
