Money talks and freedom walks. Maybe a little sound-driven aversion therapy until a better solution can be found? I just read about vultures being protected to nasty effect on homeowners. Greedy idiots abound.

We live in ranching country in California. The ranches are all fenced; however if a cow gets out by breaking the fence which they frequently do and a driver hits it, the driver is responsible to reimburse the rancher for the value of the cow. We are responsible for our own fencing to keep livestock off our private property. Everyone knows this and accepts this as the ranches were here first. You need to get a law passed for the ranchers to fence their property if they are unfenced.

Dave, it may be ludicrous but open range is an old western law for large cattle ranchers. The idea is you have to "fence out" rather than "fence in." You have to "fence out" the roving cows. The same is true in Montana. You should have been made aware of this when you bought the land. Ignorance of the law is no defense in violating it. I'm not taking sides on this, just stating the law. You may have recourse if there is no mention of this in your papers when you bought the land. Probably not.

Hi Dave, 1. Could you put up a brick or stone wall around your yard and house? 2. Could you put cow grates in the ground that they can't walk on? 3. Put decorative boulders around your fense that the cows can't walk over?
