I flew for UAL 37 years, and I agree that the skies are becoming less safe, but I don't agree on the reason stated. The pilots in the777 TO incident in Hawaii were very experienced with 25,000 hours of experience. UAL has 15,000 pilots and UAL has hundreds of flights a day, a rare incident is to be expected. Airline first officers have a minimum of 1,500 hours, 23 years of age, and have an ATP. They are not merely HS graduates.
The real problem is the reliance on automation. Airlines teach turning on the autopilot at 1,000 feet for most of the flight. Airlines believe this is safer. As a result pilots are not proficient manually flying the plane. When automation fails many pilots are not confident or competent to take over.
