The alternative is allowing the rest of the world especially China to destroy America by a thousand cuts. Half a trillion a year china alone. Free trade only works if every country does it. Only America does it. Finally until the illegal income tax was instituted America operated only on tariffs. A more prosperous time with a much smaller government.
